Celebrating dads on Father’s Day

“Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad” – Wade Boggs

The oldest dad in my family – mine

Just like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day is one of those dates on the calendar that can come with allllll of the emotions. It may be filled with love and laughter or darkened by grief and sadness, or it might fall somewhere in between. This year it could be a ‘first’ for you that either makes you smile or brings tears to your eyes (or both). Or it could be a day that’s never really meant that much to you.

I love to look at Father’s Day as an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful men in my life. My dad, of course, but also my husband, my stepson, and all the other incredible male role models I’m fortunate to have surrounding me.

Dad is, and always will be, my living, breathing superhero
— Bindi Irwin

Dad and I were super close when I was growing up. We’d always say we were ‘mates, buddies, and pals’, and I knew then, just as I know now, that I could always count on him 100%. I know if I ever need him, Dad will be there for me, and the safety and security of his love has been instrumental in me having the self-belief and confidence to go out into the world and follow my dreams.

The importance of good male role models

I think a good male role model is so important for a child – especially a young girl. It’s so important to know you’re loved unconditionally, that you’re valued and respected, and that your judgement is trusted (so please, no dad’s scaring off potential suitors, thank you very much!).

I believe a good male role model is someone who listens to and values your opinion, but who is also prepared to have a deep conversation with you to help you see all sides of an argument or situation. I used to love conversations with my dad when I was growing up (and still do!) – we’d talk about politics, history, and the meaning of life and the world (you know, all the light stuff!). He always listened and always respected my opinion, even if we disagreed. He was always open to new ideas too, and would change his stance if presented with new information that inclined him to do so. This was so important, because it taught me that my voice matters, and that my opinion matters.

The middle dad in my family – my beautiful husband, Brian, with our adorable daughter, Em

I think my husband, Brian, is an amazing role model too. He’s an incredible dad to both our children and is oh-so-comfortable with expressing his emotions, to them and to me. Our kids know he’s proud of them, no matter what, and that he’ll always be there for them, whether it’s to help them celebrate the good times or to commiserate with them and deliver big, gentle hugs if they’re feeling challenged.

One of the most beautiful things I now get to witness is seeing Brian transition from father to grandfather. He’s now the proud grandparent of a gorgeous little girl, and there’s an all-new level of tenderness and love that I get to see in him as he cuddles his baby granddaughter.

My community and the men in their lives

With these thoughts in mind, I reached out to my stepson Jack, as well as some of my best small biz pals. I wanted to know about the men in their lives and what they thought made a good role male role model.

My stepson Jack

Is there an important father-figure in your life and, if so, what makes or made him special?

The biggest father-figure in my life would have to be my own dad – the man behind the scenes at every Sandra Gale Studio marketplace stall, the master of the best/worst dad jokes, and the man we otherwise refer to as ‘Papa G’.

What do you think makes for a good male role model, and why is it important to have one?

I personally think the role of a male role model is to demonstrate how to be respectful, behave fairly, and how to treat all people equally regardless of the circumstances. A good male role model doesn’t shy away from being vulnerable or displaying emotions because he knows men don’t need to live up to the old, outdated, ‘traditional’ male profile.

I think it’s important to have these good male role models in your life because they can show you how to approach situations with respect and fairness. It’s vital to teach the younger generation that men can be loving, warm, and kind.

Jamie – Intrinsic

Is there an important father-figure in your life and, if so, what makes or made him special?

I’m lucky because my father had wonderful qualities. I feel very grateful to be able to hold onto those and carry them with me through life. Now that he’s passed away, his brother, my uncle, inspires me every day. This 95-year-old man is wise and sage, still active, and embraces each day with joy and love – what a wonderful, inspirational way to live!

What do you think makes for a good male role model, and why is it important to have one?

As a father myself, and now as a ‘papa’ too, I believe it’s important to keep learning, to practice patience, be caring, and to offer advice and support along with unconditional love. It’s important to be open, to listen, to understand, and to offer guidance and belief. Through positive encouragement and communication, male role models can help build strong and positive foundations in our youth.

Lauren – To The Trees

Is there an important father-figure in your life and, if so, what makes or made him special?

My partner, Steve, is such an amazing dad to our two kids. He’s so present with them when they share their stories, while they’re playing and when he reads with them. He inspires me endlessly.

My own dad shows me how important it is to continually learn about ourselves, to grow, and to embrace change. He’s a beautiful grandfather too, making the kids laugh and sharing in their interests.

What do you think makes for a good male role model, and why is it important to have one?

I think a good male role model embraces all aspects of themselves – the masculine and the feminine. He accepts and loves those around him without judgement or fear.

Sarah – Windella Farm

Is there an important father-figure in your life and, if so, what makes or made him special?

My stepdad, Richard, has been an important father-figure for me. He never once tried to replace my dad, but always treated my sister and me as his own. In my adulthood, he’s always offered great financial and life advice and has always been incredibly supportive to my sister and me.

What do you think makes for a good male role model, and why is it important to have one?

I think a good male role model is kind, hard-working, and someone who holds good values they live by daily. A good male role model is such an important influence for people of all ages, to help them reach their potential.

What do people often buy from your shop for Father's Day?

My most popular product for Father’s Day is ‘The Fixer’ – it’s a brilliant salve for dry, cracked hands. If there’s a man in your life who loves gardening or is a farmer, or a mechanic, he’ll love it!

Dads are the most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, story-tellers, and singers of song
— Pam Brown

Is it just me, or are those answers some of the most beautiful you’ve ever heard?

As I sit here re-reading everyone’s thoughts, I’m feeling a little teary thinking about all of these beautiful men. What a powerful reminder of the impact you can have on the world.

To all the men reading this, whether you’re a biological dad, stepdad, granddad, or just a truly great friend, please know you’re special, you matter, and you’re so, so loved. Remember…

To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world
— Dr Suess

Dads love colour too

If you haven’t already fallen completely in love with a Father’s Day gift from Intrinsic, To The Trees, or Windella Farm (and who could blame you?), my hoodies and t-shirts do look rather smashing on a gorgeous dad bod (even if I do say so myself!). Or a non-dad bod if you feel like treating yourself… either way!

Whatever this Father’s Day brings for you, I send you love.
