What it holds
The pink cockatoo in Pausing for a Moment has closed her eyes and taken a minute for herself. She’s perched against a pale pink checkerboard, framed by deep blue, wandering lines and little flowers that give the whole scene the feeling of a decorative little world of its own.
She isn’t performing or rushing anywhere. At this particular moment, she’s simply sitting there and living her best life.
Story and inspiration
This cockatoo first appeared in Because It Makes Me Smile, an artwork I created for Sydney Affordable Art Fair in 2025. She also appears among the collected objects in Little Treasures. She comes from my imagination and has become a recurring little character in this family of artworks.
I made Pausing for a Moment for Melbourne Affordable Art Fair 2026. I’ve always loved the combination of pale pink with a strong, deep blue, so I gave her a soft checkerboard backdrop and surrounded it with a much bolder border. The closed eye suggested the title. She looked as though she’d found a perfectly good perch and decided that everything else could wait.
Where it lives best
This compact portrait is easy to place above a bedside table, near the front door, beside a favourite chair or within a colourful gallery wall. Put her somewhere you often pass and she’ll create a tiny visual pause in the middle of an otherwise busy day.

Artist’s Note
I didn’t set out to give this cockatoo a grand story. I closed her eye, and she immediately looked as though she’d decided to stop for a minute, perched there against all that pale pink and deep blue. Honestly, she’s just vibing, and I love that for her. Sandra xx
