What it holds
Oh Hello There captures one of many encounters, filed away and embellished in my imagination, from my walks: a magpie appearing among layers of green leaves, soft bush colours and bright pink flowers, then turning to give you that curious look that says it has definitely noticed you too.
The scene isn’t one particular place. It holds fragments of the lush bushland, coastal views and unexpected bird meetings I love finding while travelling.
Story and inspiration
This piece grew from Finding a Friend Along the Way, the first of my road-trip-inspired magpie artworks, which sold through my newsletter before it even reached Melbourne Affordable Art Fair.
When I’m away, I love heading out on a hike and seeing what appears around the next bend. I also always say hello to the birds I meet, especially magpies. Partly because they seem like messengers who chat to one another, and partly because I’m fairly sure they keep records of who has been friendly when swoopy season arrives.
I created this smaller encounter for Affordable Art Fair Melbourne 2026, building the landscape from layers of hand-painted paper and finishing it with orange and lilac simply because the colours looked fun together.
Where it lives best
Its portrait format fits neatly above a kitchen bench, beside the front door, in a hallway or among travel photographs and collected pieces on a gallery wall. Place it somewhere you’ll meet the magpie’s eye as you pass, for a small daily encounter with a familiar local character.

It brings the feeling of spotting a familiar bird on a favourite walk into an everyday corner of your home.
The orange, lilac, green and pink palette adds colour without needing a large wall or a complete room makeover.
Its curious magpie gives a kitchen or hallway a character you can’t help acknowledging as you pass.
The layered foliage and hand-painted papers hold the imperfect marks and textures of the way it was made.
It suits someone who feels more at home with art that carries a story, a little humour and a distinctly Australian visitor.

Artist’s Note
I always say hello to the birds I meet on walks, and magpies seem particularly willing to stop and have a chat.
